Homes for All!

A new report on housing need in the UK published by APSE and the Town and Country Planning Association (TCPA) calls for urgent Government action to deliver the homes needed in the UK.  The report finds that despite ambitions to build one million homes by 2020, current housing policy is in disarray and much more needs to be done to deliver the desperately needed new homes.  Key research findings show that 93% of councils do not think that Starter Homes will address affordable housing need and almost 80% of local councils do not think that Starter Homes should be classified as affordable housing.

Essentially the report calls for Government to put in place a housing strategy for the nation that provides decent homes for all. Whilst efforts have been concentrated on so-called affordable homes this is often not the case leaving many homes out of reach for the vast majority of people. The situation is even worse for those dependent on social and genuinely affordable housing for rent. The report calls for a national  housing strategy which will put local authorities and new council homes at the heart of a new housing strategy.

The report sets out 15 key recommendations centred upon leadership, funding social and affordable housing, new models of housing delivery, including local authority housing companies, planning, housing standards, skills and capacity.
