Climate change emergency declarations and frontline services
Over 250 local authorities have now declared a ‘climate change emergency’. The political and officer leadership of councils have thrown their weight behind the message that urgent action is needed – hence the use of the term ‘emergency’. Reducing carbon impact by reducing carbon usage is the aim but there are many ways to achieve this and recent APSE research suggests that any action now to reduce carbon will be worth more in the long term. So with speed of action being a real necessity we are ready to assist in greening your frontline services, with sector and industry experts.
Moving council fleet to electric or alternative fuels
Although not perfect there is little doubt that electric vehicles are, over their lifetime, greener than conventional vehicles as they are far more efficient in their use of fuel. Whilst in the end vehicle electrification may prove to be a transitional technology to be eclipsed by other emerging solutions, such as hydrogen power or something yet to be developed, moving council fleet away from fossil fuels will provide some immediate moves away from reliance on fossil fuels, and help reduce your councils’ carbon footprint.
APSE Solutions can assist with fleet reviews, including options appraisals, alongside looking at how you can reduce your carbon footprint by smarter use of the existing fleet, to reduce miles and fossil fuel consumption, in advance of transitioning your fleet to alternate fuels. We can also assist you, alongside APSE energy on appraisals for electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
Waste, resources and streetscene
With specialists in the field on waste, refuse, and recycling as well as streetscene services we are happy to assist local councils with green service reviews. These reviews cover a range of areas from the application of planning powers, through to the collection of household waste, the emphasis of our review will be on helping you to achieve the minimisation of the carbon impact of the services provided, such as avoiding the need for large vehicles, and less carbon intensive waste disposal methodologies, such as pneumatic or underground communal bins. These are things that can be done now!
Parks and public realm
We know that the public love local parks and public realm and they are a great way to engage the public in a council climate emergency response. Aside from the engagement power of parks and public realm they are also an asset that can help you manage the council response to its climate emergency. From tree planting schemes to water efficiency, and use of parks as part of your flood alleviation schemes an APSE Solutions ‘Green Parks and Public Realm’ review will help you navigate the right approach locally for your council.
