APSE are looking at the issue of Food waste and collection/disposal
from school kitchens and other local authority catering outlets

· Into what is it stored?

A member authority would like to ask others:
1. What types of vehicles are being used for meals on wheels
deliveries?
2. What kind of storage containers are used to transport the food
stuff and keep it hot or cold?
3. Are any storage containers used in electric vehicles that also
provide power to the hot or cold containers?

This member authority would like to hear from colleagues regarding
the provision of Halal Meat within your school meal service.
Specifically,
1. What policy (if any) do you have on providing Halal Meat
within your school meal provision?
2. If you do have a policy, are you will to share this?
3. If you have no policy, do you serve Halal Meat to all or do you
cater for individual requests in rural areas for low ethnic populations?

 

CAT0187 - Catering provision for Babies (0 - 1 year olds) in Nursery schools 27.09.16

This member authority would like to know what other local
authorities done in terms of feeding babies between zero and 1 year
old at nursery? Including providing anything in terms of modified
diets, formula milk or food that is puree'd etc.
Any examples of menus for 0-1 year olds or other relevant
documents (staffing levels/hours etc) that could be shared would be
greatly appreciated.

 

CAT0184 - Charging VAT on staff school meals 20.06.16

This local authority would like to hear from colleagues in relation to
whether VAT is charged on staff school meals, specifically:-
1. Is VAT charged on teachers’ school meals?
2. Is VAT charged to visitors who have a school meal?

CAT0183 - Hourly pay rates for Catering and Cleansing staff in Wales 07.06.16

The Wales Catering and Cleaning Advisory Group at its last
meeting was discussing the issue of the Living Wage and how it
was affecting pay rates across services .
The group was interested in discovering the different hourly rates of
pay for specific job roles within the cleaning and catering services
across Wales, as it was apparent there were noticeable difference
between authorities.
APSE is therefore sending out a network query request to identify
the pay rates for the posts below.
Any information received will be shared across those Welsh local
authorities providing details of their pay rates.
The information being sought regards hourly pay rates are for the
following for roles:
Catering :
· Supervisor
· Cook
· Assistant Cook
· Kitchen Assistant
Cleaning :
· Supervisor
· Caretaker
· Cleaner-in-Charge

CAT0182 - Heavy Catering Equipment Maintenance 20.05.16

A member authority is reviewing the agreements it has with schools
for the upkeep and replacement of heavy catering equipment
(cookers, fridges, washing machines etc)
Please can you answer the following:
· How do you charge the school for maintenance?
· Who carries out the maintenance?
· Who is responsible for sourcing new/replacement equipment?
· Who is deemed to own the equipment?
Do you have a standard agreement covering equipment that you
can share?

Are there any Local Authorities/School Meal providers that:
1. Have previously considered a central production model for
frozen school meals but decided not to proceed?
2. Are currently considering a model for the central production of
frozen school meals?
3. Currently have a central production model for frozen school

CAT0179 - Social Pricing of School Meals 05.04.16

A member authority is exploring the possibility of introducing ‘social
pricing’ for school meals.
To inform that decision, they would like to know:
· Does your authority have a ‘social pricing policy’ (i.e.,
discounting meal charges for families with more than one child etc.)?
· The nature of that policy (i.e., across the service or only at
individual schools, the level of ‘discount’ and how it is ‘targeted’ and
or applied)?
· Does this apply to any Secondary Schools (or families with
both Primary and secondary aged children)?
· Is any such policy ‘self-funding’ (paid for through increased
uptakes), paid for by schools or met through council subsidy?

A member authority is struggling with the variety of dining tables
and chairs found within dual use dining halls
Storage space is often at a premium and some collapsible
equipment is causing handling injuries and is not robust
Can you recommend any makes / suppliers of dining furniture with
the following qualities:
• good quality?
• value for money?
• safe and easy for staff to handle in large quantities?
• easy to store in confined spaces?

A member authority is gradually introducing online payment
facilities, so that parents can pay online by card for their child’s
school meal.
They have experienced several problems in the lead up to going live
and are interested to learn from others.
Which online payment system do you use?

A member authority is currently looking at training methods for
school caretaking and cleaning staff based in remote areas of the
Council's operational catchment area who only work several hours
each week.
Please can you supply the following information:
· Do you pay overtime for staff attendance of mandatory training
sessions e.g. health and safety, data protection?
· Are training sessions done on an individual basis or do you
arrange staff development days for staff in remote areas?
· What mandatory training sessions do you have?
· Do you have a rolling programme of training following induction
into caretaking and cleaning roles?
· What methods for training caretaking and cleaning staff do you
use e.g. online learning, classroom, supervisor face to face, training
booklets, training videos?
· Do have specialist training staff who train on site in remote areas,
or do you use supervisors / managers to train caretaking and
cleaning staff?
· Do you have any mandatory training or staff induction materials
