As you may be aware we recently launched the APSE Local Government Commission 2030. The Commission will consider the future role of local government; stewardship of place; local finance and funding regimes; local government organisation and structures; workforce capacities and roles; local service provision; local democracy and accountability; community leadership, equality and diversity; and centre-local relations. The Commission will then produce a report, with recommendations, in early 2021, based on its finding from written and oral evidence from interested parties across the UK.
As part of the evidence gathering process we are hosting a special evidence session for Northern Ireland Local Government to further inform the work of the Commission. You are therefore invited to attend this session to ensure your views are included within the Commissions evidence gathering process. This will take place at the Crowne Plaza Belfast on Friday 21 February commencing at 10.00 AM and ending with a networking lunch at 12.30 PM. This evidence gathering session will take place the day after the NILGA conference and the Northern Ireland Local Government Awards which should assist attendance by those already at the Crowne Plaza following that event.
The evidence session will commence at 10.00 AM with opening remarks from the Chair of the Commission, Paul O’Brien and will be followed by Professor Steven Griggs who will lead attendees into key lines of inquiry to ensure a full range of views are gathered.
A copy of the Commissions initial Call for Evidence is attached. We would encourage responses to this in advance of the oral evidence session where possible. You can read more about the APSE Local Government Commission on the dedicated web hub which is here.
