The future of self-driving vehicles in Great Britain: Meet CCAV and learn about the Automated Passenger Services Permitting Scheme and the Wider Regulatory Framework

Hear directly from representatives from the CCAV (Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles), part of the Department from Transport, on the Government's approach to enabling the safe commercial deployment of self-driving vehicles in Great Britain.

The presentation will:

• Introduce the Automated Passenger Services (APS) permitting scheme and its role in enabling commercial self-driving passenger services.
• Explain the wider regulatory framework being established under the Automated Vehicles Act 2024.
• Discuss the role of local authorities in the deployment of self-driving services, including consent requirements, local engagement and opportunities for collaboration.
• For local authority highways and transport teams, this work is particularly relevant as local authorities will play an important role. The session will provide an opportunity to understand the emerging regulatory framework, the APS permitting scheme, local authority consent requirements, and how local authorities can engage with government and industry.

• The Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CCAV) is a specialist unit within the Department for Transport (DfT) responsible for leading policy and regulation relating to connected and self-driving vehicle technologies. CCAV is leading the implementation of the Automated Vehicles Act 2024, establishing the regulatory framework required to support the safe deployment of self-driving vehicles on roads across Great Britain.
