Benchmarking energy costs was a topic recently discussed at APSE’s BIG Energy Summit. Jeremy Martin from Southend-on-Sea Borough Council highlighted the main trends in energy pricing over recent years and the potential gains from reduced prices. Benchmarking energy costs will potentially lead to significant savings or confirm that you are already paying the best prices.

It will involve a series of steps including:-

• identification of the level of interest in a benchmarking exercise
• volunteers coming together in a working group either in person or via email to discuss what data to collect, the format for collection and how to go about data benchmarking
• requests for data to be sent out and returned by interested parties
• analysis of data and format into a report
• data shared with all who responded
• discussion of how to share information about energy procurement and how best prices are achieved
• a review of the usefulness of the exercise.

All of the data requested is likely to be in the public domain but anonymity can be discussed through the working group. Data collection will be kept to a minimum.
