One of the topics attracting a lot of attention amongst those with sustainability and energy responsibilities across local authorities is housing standards. APSE Energy along with the REA produced a document detailing the Merton Rule, the rule enabling local authorities to ensure better energy efficiency and the installation of more renewable energy  in developments in their area. This is linked to the housing standards issue and it is well recognised that the best time to install energy efficiency and generation equipment is during build if at all possible. This often means the local authority talking a stand to promote better standards and future proof properties and the role of the planning department is crucial. Knowledge of the latest developments, products and models is vital as part of informing this discussion and that is what we will learn about at this session at BRE.

BRE and have been focusing on local authorities (particularly planning departments) and how they can drive standards in new construction (particularly the Home Quality Mark). There are other initiatives that BRE are currently delivering including a program led by the UKGBC looking to build consensus around the best practice in sustainable housing (what can actually be built) and the tools and policy mechanisms that can be realistically used by local planning authorities to help enable their delivery (given the current legislative and policy context).

This will be an accompanied session combining opportunities to hear about and discuss the topics highlighted as see how products and models related to those topics are developing.

Those with responsibilities involving energy management, planning, housing, air quality, environmental health, assets, economic development, investment would benefit from attending this event. It is of interest to anyone with an interest in the future of the built environment especially bearing in mind the expected growth in house building across areas of central and southern England.

The agenda for this event is attached. This is a free event for APSE Energy members. Non-APSE Energy members are also welcome.
