The Role: Bereavement Officer
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Bereavement Officer to act as the Council’s professional lead for bereavement services. This is a key role with responsibility for ensuring the effective, compassionate, and compliant delivery of bereavement-related services, supporting members of our community at difficult times.
Key Responsibilities
Act as the Council’s professional lead and principal point of contact for bereavement services, excluding crematorium-related services.
• Lead the delivery of services under the Public Health Funeral Policy, including oversight of associated procedures, workstreams, and contracts.
• Manage the day-to-day back-office operations of the Council’s cemeteries and Public Health Funeral Service, ensuring services are delivered efficiently and sensitively.
• Provide advice and guidance to internal stakeholders and external partners on bereavement-related matters.
• Ensure services are delivered in line with relevant legislation, policy, and best practice.
About You:
• You will be a compassionate and organised professional with experience in bereavement, or a related service area.
You will have:
• Experience of managing or coordinating complex service delivery within a public sector or similar environment.
• Ability to interact with an operational service i.e. the grounds maintenance team to assist with burials
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to act as a trusted point of contact for sensitive issues.
• A clear understanding of the importance of dignity, respect, and empathy in bereavement services.
