A Member Authority are seeking information regarding the average cost of energy to produce a school meal. The Member Authority would like to know the following:-

1. Has your council calculated what the energy cost to produce a school meal?

CAT0245 - Menu / school apps - 051219

This local authority would like to hear from any local authority using a menu and/ or school app to communicate with parents and pupils regarding school meal options. In particular they would be interested to know:-

1. Do you use any form of app to communicate menus with parents/ pupils?

2. What is the name of the software / app used?

3. Would you be willing to share further information on your experience of this application?


CAT0244 - Laundering of cloths and tea towels - 191119

A member authority are seeking information on what other local authorities do in school kitchens regarding the laundering of cloths and tea towels

  • Does your authority use tea towels for drying purposes and non-disposable cloths for prepared food production, if not what do you use
  • If electrical appliances are used as in washing machines and washer / driers are these domestic or commercial products
  • If a commercial product could they supply the make and model that they currently install

CAT0243 - School Meal Uptakes - 211119

A member authority is interested to learn what other authorities are doing to increase school meal uptakes. The member authority are specifically seeking information regarding the following?

(i.) What is the average percentage school meal uptake for primary schools in 2017/2018?

(ii.) What is the average percentage school meal uptake for secondary schools in 2017/2018?

(iii.) How does this compare with the percentage 2016/17?

(iv.) What initiatives have your authority undertaken is increase uptakes?

(v.) What has been the impact of the initiatives?

A Member Authority are seeking information regarding to protective footwear in school kitchens (education). The Member Authority are specifically looking for the following information:-

  • Who provides it?
  • What type of footwear/shoe cover do you provide?
  • Does any Authority have a risk based approach and only provides footwear dependent on the kitchen flooring type?
  • Does any Authority provide footwear that has different soles depending on the kitchen flooring type?
  • Who does not provide?
  • Who uses a sensible shoe policy (and does not provide footwear)?
  • Does anyone provide financial support for a sensible shoe (much like the eye care voucher)?

CAT0241 - Removal of ham from the school meals menu - 021019

A Member Authority are currently seeking information regarding the impact on uptake from the removal of ham from school meals menu. The Member Authority are specifically looking for the following information:-

(i) Has your authority seen a noticeable drop in school meals uptake since removing ham from the school meals menu?

(ii) Comparing with the same period last year, what is the percentage drop?


CAT0240 - Catering service charges to schools - 021019

A Member Authority are currently seeking information regarding what the catering service charges to schools. Specifically the Member Authority are looking for the following details:-

(i) What is the standard price of a primary meal?

(ii) Do catering charge a management fee? Is this fixed or dependant on meal uptake and what is it

(iii) Do catering charge schools a fixed fee to repair and maintain kitchen equipment? – and what is this charge?

(iv) Do catering charge schools for the replacement of light equipment? is this a fixed fee or dependant on meal uptake - and would they share this charge?


CAT0239 - Formula for the number of hours to meals served - 160919

A Member Authority are seeking information regarding the formula other authorities use to calculate the number of hours to meals served per day?


CAT0238 - Managing Allergen Requests - 160819

A member authority is seeking information on how colleagues are managing their allergen requests. Specifically they would like to know:-

1. What is your process regarding an allergen request?

2. Do you have timescales in terms of responding?

3. Has a policy been developed/ produced on the level of menu adaption which can be provided? Any information / copies of policies and processes on this would be greatly appreciated.


CAT0237 - Contracts with caterers for event catering - 110719

A Member Authority are currently reviewing their contract with the preferred caterers for event catering. The Member Authority are seeking information on the arrangements that other authorities have in place with the caterers, in particular if a commission is charged and what percentage is this charged at?

 

CAT0236 - Food allergies and school meal provision - 110719

A Member authority are currently seeking information regarding food allergies and school meal provision. The Member Authority are specifically interested in the following:-

1. With regard to food allergies, does any authority only provide special diets for the 14 main food allergens as set out in the EU FIC Food Information for Consumers Regulation?

2. Does any authority refuse to provide a meal for a pupil with an air-borne allergy?

3. Would any authority refuse to provide a meal for a UIFSM pupils if the allergy is complex or not one of the 14 specified allergens?

 

CAT0235 - Local authority Catering Primary Authority Partnerships - 210619

A member Council School & Residential Care Catering service has formed a Primary Authority Partnership with a neighbouring Council’s Environmental Health Dept. for the purposes of monitoring and testing the compliance of the catering service against the legal requirements of a Food Business Operator and in order to drive strategic improvements.

Have any other LA Caterers formed a Primary Authority Partnership and if so, would you be willing to discuss your experiences of this?

 

CAT0234 - Precautionary Allergen Labelling ‘May Contain’ and School Meals - 110419

The use of precautionary ‘may contain’ allergen labelling in prepacked food is widespread and is most probably being supplied to local authorities on a daily basis and this presents a particular challenge when providing meals comprising multiple ingredients to schools, nurseries, care homes etc.

This authority would like to ask other local authorities how they address the issue of precautionary ‘may contain’ allergen labelling in the school meals context?

 

CAT0233 - VAT costs on Meals on Wheels provision - 070319

A member authority is seeking information regarding VAT and meals on wheels provision and are keen to ascertain the following:-

1. Has your local authority benchmarked VAT costs or Meal on Wheels as a result of trading outside of their statutory area.

2. What particular business rules apply when setting the VAT costing.
