New APSE Energy publication titled ‘Local authority climate emergency declarations’

You can download a summary report of a new APSE Energy research paper ‘Local authority climate emergency declarations’ as featured in the Guardian which provides an understanding of what declaring a climate emergency can do, when to use it and how it can be used in the context of local councils.

When a Council passes any motion it reflects the importance that the organisation places on the issue and it signals their intent to address it. It seems only logical that if the Council passes a climate emergency declaration that the same can be said for this agenda. This report outlines the practical pathways open to councils in taking forward action on climate change; moving beyond a declaration and into real actions to decarbonise services, encourage behaviour change in local areas through residents and businesses and realign corporate strategy, to place climate considerations at the heart of every service and every action taken by the council in the short, mid and long term.
