A festive message to our local government heroes

As we head towards the end of another tumultuous year in local government, it is perhaps time to reflect on everything the sector has achieved as a frontline public service like no other!

We share with you the APSE 2023 poem, which this year was written by our own poet laureate, Matt Ellis, APSE Principal Advisor!

‘Twas the night before Christmas when all through the borough,

Street sweepers were beeping and sweeping streets thorough,

Road maintenance teams have potholes to repair,

Whilst meals on wheels are prepared with great care.

High streets and town centres all hustle and bustle,

Leisure centres and gyms have folks flexing their muscle,

As pathways in parks and green spaces are gritted,

In council-owned homes brand new boilers are fitted.

Forget about bin bags clogging the streets,

The waste teams are here with their electric fleet,

Community centres double up as warm spaces,

To help bring smiles to vulnerable faces.

All through the borough without a fanfare,

Our frontline heroes are sure to be there,

To make sure our season is filled with good cheer,

APSE thanks you! Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
