Plant ecosystems, which have taken millions of years to develop, are being broken apart due to the movement of non-native plants between different countries. This has resulted in the widespread introduction of previously unknown plant pathogens into new geographical areas where they have no natural predators. Across the world, the effects have been devastating.
So, what can local government do to change this?
This report outlines how local authorities must not only be aware of how their actions can influence and improve the way we look after the UK’s plants and trees, but also provides examples of best practice in meeting this responsibility.
This report will not solve all the problems of plant and tree diseases and pests. Nor will it eliminate the prospect of non-native invasive species. However, what it will do is help raise awareness and provide exemplars of good plant biosecurity practices which, together, will support Government plant biosecurity aims and objectives and hopefully strengthen European and global actions in this area.
