Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) became mandatory on 12 February 2024 under Schedule 7A of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 (as inserted by Schedule 14 of the Environment Act 2021).

Are you a parks’ professional who is looking to further their understanding of Biodiversity Net Gain? APSE is pleased to offer the latest in our portfolio of parks’ courses: Preparing for Biodiversity Net Gain.

This course will outline the background to this element of the Environment Act 2021, how it relates to corporate and service level plans, how it applies in practice and what it means for parks professionals.

Participants will use tools to help in assessing suitable sites and develop plans to engage in planning processes at an early stage.

Although not mandatory in Scotland or Northern Ireland, the most recent State of Nature report, published in 2019, suggests there has been a 13% decline in the average abundance of wildlife in the UK since the 1970s, despite legislation and policy to protect biodiversity and wildlife. This course contains useful information about nature recovery and planning, which is equally relevant to authorities across the UK.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of what the new Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) legislation is and how it affects you
  • Appreciate how BNG can contribute towards place making and improving the environment
  • Understand how you can link BNG to your corporate and service objectives
  • Commit to supporting the delivery of BNG projects in your area by taking practical action

Who Will Benefit?

Specifically parks professionals who are keen to further their understanding of this crucial topic and how their role is instrumental to the delivery of BNG. However, any local authority colleague keen to understand more would benefit from attending.

This course will be delivered online via Microsoft Teams. To access it, you will need a WiFi connection or mobile data hotspot. Downloading Microsoft Teams to your laptop, desktop or smart device will give a better performance and greater functionality throughout the day.  This highly interactive training includes a mixture of presentations, video conferencing, group work, games, quizzes and video.
