The Burial and Cremation (Scotland) Act 2016, has for the first time attempted to bring together a standardised approach to human burial and cremation practices across Scotland.

This Act was the result of the identification of a number of incorrect practices which had been addressed in a series of public enquiries and resultant reports highlighting the need to resolve problems around different practices, gaps in information and other inconsistencies and weaknesses across the Scottish Bereavement sector. The key outcome has been the move to promote improvements in practice, technology, policy, and legislation.

Therefore, The Burial and Cremation (Scotland) Act 2016 has, and will, replace much of the existing legislation and provide an updated comprehensive legislative framework for burial and cremation in Scotland.

This course, through a mixture of presentations and interactive group discussions, will look at the two areas of cremation and burial, and explain the known responsibilities as outlined in the Cremation (Scotland) Regulations 2019, but also consider the impacts and potential changes the Burial (Part 1) elements of the Act will bring to local authorities across Scotland.

The course will provide an excellent opportunity to raise amongst colleagues, any questions or concerns regarding the implementation of current or proposed changes and regulations which will collectively be forwarded on to with Scottish Government.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this session, you will:

  • Discuss how the regulations within the Act were developed and what they aim to achieve
  • Be familiar with the different components of the Act.
  • Scrutinise the current regulations concerning cremation, and the potential impact of proposed burial regulations.
  • Consider how the regulations can be implemented and how they will impact on current service provision and the bereaved.

Who Will Benefit?
