Reading Borough Council has approved plans to install around 2,600 EV charging points across residential streets with limited or no off-street parking, as part of its wider efforts to expand access to EV infrastructure across the borough.
Supported by £866,000 from the Government’s Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) fund, the scheme aims to ensure at least 90% of households without driveways are located within 100 metres of an EV charger.
Most of the charging points will be fitted to existing lamp columns to minimise disruption, with standalone units being introduced in locations where additional space is available. While the project aims to cover the whole borough, priority will be given to high-density residential areas without access to off-street parking.
This rollout forms part of the council’s wider efforts to support the transition to electric vehicles, while reducing vehicle emissions and improving air quality and public health locally.
