A member authority is seeking information regarding management of the cemetery booking process. They would like to know how other councils accept, process, and manage cemetery booking.

CEM0219 - Non-resident fee policy - 260126

A member authority is currently reviewing their documents regarding non resident fee policy following a number of recent challenges. The member authority is seeking information regarding a non-resident fee policy in relation to burials and purchase of exclusive rights of burial. Specifically, they would like to know:

1. Does your council apply a premium for the burial of non residents? If so how much (either a fixed amount or % increase)

2. Is there a premium applied for purchase of exclusive rights of burial? (either fixed amount or % increase) is the premium applied based on the residence of the purchaser of the exclusive rights or based on the residence of the person being buried?

3. Is there a written non-resident fee policy document, or if the policy is part of the cemetery rules/regulations/bylaws would colleagues be prepared to share those documents (or provide a link to their website if they are published on-line)

This local authority is seeking information regarding recouping costs for public health funerals, if the deceased had jewellery that could be of sentimental value? For example, if no family is traced or no family willing to take on the arrangements/have contact regarding arrangements but the deceased has a potential engagement/wedding ring or a collection of nice watches/pocket watches, do others retain these items (if so for how long) or are they sold on to recover funeral costs if the consent is given for the LA to make burial arrangements?
