Announcing the APSE National Building and Housing Apprentice of the Year Award 2025

Announcing the APSE National Building and Housing Apprentice of the Year Award 2025

We are delighted to announce that the APSE National Building and Housing Apprentice awards will be held for the first time in Scotland as part of the APSE Building and Housing Seminar taking place in the stunning Hilton Glasgow on the 6 - 7 March 2025.

The aim of the Apprentice Awards, which will be open to every Council across the UK, is not only to give recognition to our future tradespersons/ professionals, but also to the Councils themselves who continue to invest in and provide first class training / employment initiatives in bone-fide Apprenticeship schemes which given the current economic conditions is increasingly important and needs to be encouraged.

The Awards scheme is open to all recognised apprenticeships within the areas of Building and Housing including Trade and non-trade/professional and to apprentices from all stages of training (1st year to 4th year).  Each entry will be examined individually and assessed on its own merit. The submission should be based over one academic year (August 2023 / July 2024) and take the form of a portfolio containing:

  • 500 words describing the individual’s reasons for starting this career, longer term objectives, progress, barriers and how you have overcome them, etc. (To be completed by the individual).
  • Details of the course schedule or training plan which the portfolio is based on. (Must cover year August 2023 / July 2024).
  • A selection of jobs/ tasks which provide examples of work carried out within the past twelve months. (5 pieces of work should be provided and these should be detailed entries e.g. a start to finish account of the job or task undertaken).
  • Photographs of work being undertaken.

  • References from on-site supervisors/ manager, trainers and college lecturers with at least one from each.

  • Copies of relevant progress reports over the year, both from training provider and/or council supervisor.

  • A full record of relevant college/training centre achievements including special awards received.

  • Supporting evidence.

The judges have a large number of submissions to mark.  Those submissions which are well set out, follow the sections noted above, provide sufficient detail and are legible will score higher as the judges only have the portfolios to go on at this stage.

All short-listed finalists will be interviewed and presented at an awards ceremony scheduled to take place at the APSE Building and Housing Seminar in the Hilton Glasgow on the 6 - 7 March 2025.

The opportunity to recognise and promote the good work of Councils across the UK in providing quality employment opportunities to their local communities is invaluable and I am sure that with your support and active participation via the sponsorship of apprenticeships, the Awards will once again be an outstanding success.

It would be greatly appreciated if you would complete and return the notification form online here by Friday 11th Oct 2024, indicating if your Council wishes to participate in the scheme for 2025. All submissions should be submitted electronically using the online submission template.  This word document can be downloaded at the end of completing the notification form online.  It should also be noted that the final deadline for all electronic portfolio submissions to be returned is Friday 25th Oct 2024.

Please do not hesitate to contact the APSE Scotland office on 01698 459 051 if you require any further information or have any questions regarding the awards.
