From Asian Longhorn Beetles to Ash Dieback, local authorities are struggling to control pests, diseases and invasive species that can devastate a fragile ecosystem. The significant damage to our greenspaces harms not only the environment but also community well-being and the local economy.
Now climate change is only increasing the problem, with hotter dryer summers and wetter milder winters drawing in even more pests and diseases and increasing how quickly they spread. Meanwhile, native plants and wildlife struggle to survive.
APSE’s course in Plant Biosecurity explores the measures local authorities can take to prevent or control the threat. We outline the meaning and history of Plant Biosecurity, look at the pests and diseases we are currently dealing with, and discuss those we may have to deal with in future. We also explain how to avoid causing further harm, such as raising public awareness and ensuring new planting schemes are suitable for the area. Finally, through trainer input, case studies, and discussion, we look at real-world solutions you can apply to your region.
What will you learn?
- The meaning of ‘plant biosecurity’, its origins, its historical development, and previous approaches used
- The impacts plant pathogens, insect pests and non-native invasive plant species have on the UK environment, economy and well-being
- The specific current and future threats from plant pathogens and invasive species
- A toolkit of operational practice to promote and implement plant biosecurity practices in your workplace.
- How to develop formal plant biosecurity policies and awareness raising programmes
