Climate Emergency Public Engagement Survey

This report summarises the results from a joint collaboration between APSE Energy and the Consultation Institute to establish what work local authorities have undertaken on engaging the public on the climate emergency. Officers from 84 local authorities replied to our survey: broadly speaking the respondents were representative of the make-up of all local authorities.

Our survey found that two thirds of the respondents had declared a climate emergency and all but a handful of the rest had made some other significant commitment on climate change. However, it also revealed that less than half of the respondents could confirm that they had a climate change engagement strategy.

This report includes four interesting case studies from local authorities who have begun work on engaging the public on the climate emergency. It also suggests 10 key actions that authorities can take now to move forward with climate engagement. We hope that the report will help local authorities as they embark on a long-term programme of engaging the public on this critical issue.
