Volunteers can make a huge difference to the quality of life of local communities, contributing to the delivery of local authority outcomes. Managing the quality of local provision is vital. It is therefore incumbent on local authorities to ensure the quality of volunteer management and support reflects the value of such an important frontline resource.

In addition to local community volunteering, many non-for profit, faith, voluntary and community organisations deliver services on behalf of local authorities, through the commissioning process. This sector can be vibrant and dynamic, with innovative solutions to local challenges.

This course will help local authorities to understand their obligations and responsibilities in managing volunteers effectively and supporting voluntary and community organisations, to ensure that community benefits and local authority outcomes are realised.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the session you will:

  • Clarify the value of volunteers in service delivery
  • Appreciate what motivates people to volunteer
  • Compare the practice of managing volunteers with managing paid employees
  • Assess the purpose and content of volunteer policies
  • Devise strategies and protocols for volunteer recruitment
  • Explore the use of Volunteer agreements
  • Develop a basic volunteer induction

Who Will Benefit?

The session will benefit service managers, team leaders or frontline staff in the process of commissioning volunteers to deliver part or all of their front line service. It will also benefit anyone who is responsible for delivering services and local outcomes through volunteers or community organisations.

This course will be delivered online via Microsoft Teams. To access it, you will need a WiFi connection or mobile data hotspot.
