Helping Address the crises of Climate Change and Biodiversity loss through grassland management and wildflower planting.
Is your authority interested in increasing the opportunities for biodiversity and wider green space management as part of its climate mitigation plans?
Many local authorities have developed Climate Action Plans and declared ecological emergencies in response to rising global temperatures, extreme weather events and the UK’s significant biodiversity loss.
Planting of millions of trees across the UK is being widely adopted to sequester carbon and increase levels of biodiversity. However, trees take many years to mature before they reach their full carbon capture potential. Equally the UK has seen a surge in tree related disease such as Ash Dieback, which is hindering the effectiveness of this approach.
This training course will look at adopting different grassland management techniques, including wildflower planting schemes, which can be implemented at a much faster rate, with similar benefits to tree planting.
In addition to climate mitigation, species-rich grasslands and wildflower areas also create diverse habitats and deliver increased food sources.
The training will show that through careful planning and new maintenance and management techniques, such features can be introduced effectively.
Who should attend ?
This online training course is a critical learning opportunity and must attend event, for all those who are involved in climate change, increasing the opportunities for biodiversity and wider green space management. It will also appeal to any officers and elected members who have a role to play in developing community engagement.
Because of the growing need to use greenspace assets in helping address the negative impacts of climate change and increasing the levels of biodiversity, then the value of species rich grasslands and associated wildflower areas should not be underestimated, and neither should their value to the local communities who can be actively involved in helping to establish, manage and monitor these areas. Therefore, this course will offer a great deal of knowledge and practical experiences both for officers and elected members alike.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the training, you will:
- Identify the climate change benefits species rich grasslands can bring.
- Develop an understanding of the role of species rich grasslands and wildflower areas in wider ecosystems.
- Appreciate and understand the importance of planning and strategy development to successfully introduce species rich grasslands and wildflower areas.
- Be aware of the work of other authorities who have introduced species rich grasslands and wildflower areas and learn of the benefits this has brought.
- Understand the importance of gaining partner and community support and involvement.
- Gain a level of understanding regarding the maintenance and management required to deliver sustainable and healthy species rich grasslands and wildflower areas
